2010-2014 Globalizing Business Schools Program for HBCUs

The Globalizing Business Schools (GBS) project is designed to infuse understanding and the importance of international and interdisciplinary business education by equipping faculty with the pedagogical tools, knowledge, and experiences to incorporate international content into existing business courses and/or develop new courses. A integral component of the program is the one-on-one assistance provided by the sponsoring CIBERs to their respective HBCU in facilitating the implementation of international business education programs and in acquiring federal grant funds to support these efforts.

WorldQuest is an annual knowledge-based competition with questions focusing on international affairs, current events, the global economy, geography, world history, and general knowledge about the world. This year’s categories include: Where in the World - Geography, flags, and world facts; Globe Trotting - Current events and world cultures; Pittsburgh Meets the World; International Who’s Who - Famous people in the news WorldQuest 2009 featured a special EuroQuest prize for all questions relating to Europe. This special feature was brought to our competition last year with support from the European Union.

The University of Pennsylvania Model United Nations Conference (UPMUNC) is one of the country's largest collegiate debate conferences. The 44th session of UPMUNC will be held from November 11th to 14th 2010 and will take place in downtown Philadelphia. In addition to the 300 Penn students staffing this conference, 1300 motivated university students from some of the world's most prestigious schools will be attending UPMUNC to debate issues pertaining to current events, international affairs and global development.

2011 China: An Emerged Economic Powerhouse in the Global Economy
January 3-14, 2011  - University of Colorado Denver   [Details]

The program compares the dynamic growth of China’s two leading economic regions – the Yangtze River Delta and the Pearl River Delta – and explores China’s transformation from a planned economy to a globally competitive market oriented economy. Faculty will meet with entrepreneurs, business executives, and government officials who make this growth happen and visit cultural sites, universities, and companies to develop a framework for the past and present. The program begins in Shanghai, China’s burgeoning economic and financial center with 25% of China’s exports and 12.5% of its financial revenues. Participants travel to Hangzhou where the GDP has increased an average of 22% annually. On to Guangzhou, a world class manufacturing center where 34% of China’s exports, 30% of its foreign direct investment, and 19% of its GDP occur on 0.5% of China’s land. Finally to Hong Kong, a world class service center that ranks among the most competitive regions on the globe.

Academic WorldQuest

Academic WorldQuest is an annual knowledge-based competition with questions focusing on international affairs, current events, the global economy, geography, world history, and general knowledge about the world. Who Can Play? This is a team competition. Teams consist of four high school students from the same school. In order to allow for as many schools as possible to participate, only one team per school district is permitted to enter the competition. This event is offered at NO CHARGE and is open to teams of high school students and their accompanying teachers or chaperons. What is the grand prize? The 1st place team will go on to the National Academic WorldQuest competition to be held in Washington, DC, from April 24-25, 2010, sponsored by the World Affairs Councils of America. Participants at the national competition will enjoy a weekend of exciting activities and a discussion with a prominent speaker. These events, as well as transportation and hotel costs, will be covered for the winning team and one teacher sponsor or chaperon. There also are awards for second and third place teams. All competition participants will receive T-shirts.
