Rob Gifford, NPR's Shanghai correspondent, will discuss his recent book detailing his 3,000 mile journey across China. A fluent Mandarin speaker, Gifford explored and spoke with people in the factory towns of coastal areas, in the rural heart of China, and in the Gobi desert. The talk begins at 5:30 pm, and free parking is available in the underground parking accessed from McCauley Street. Location: FedEx Global Education Center, UNC Chapel Hill
International Week aims to expand the awareness of and interest in global learning opportunities by celebrating the intercultural diversity of campus life. This annual event also promotes collaboration of various divisions and departments as well as student groups on campus and strengthens the University of Pittsburgh as a center for international education.
International Week provides a variety of activities that support and complement the academic and public service missions of the University. Each day has been selected to reflect different global issues such as global economy, global security, global health, global education, and international law. In addition each day showcases the wide variety of cultural events that the University of Pittsburgh has to offer.

The Globalizing Business Schools (GBS) project is designed to infuse understanding and the importance of international and interdisciplinary business education by equipping faculty with the pedagogical tools, knowledge, and experiences to incorporate international content into existing business courses and/or develop new courses. A integral component of the program is the one-on-one assistance provided by the sponsoring CIBERs to their respective HBCU in facilitating the implementation of international business education programs and in acquiring federal grant funds to support these efforts. Community College Initiative (CCI) programs provide quality educational programs, professional development, employment skills and a first-hand understanding of American society to underserved, non-elite international young adults. Students participating in the program return home to contribute to the continued economic and democratic development of their home nations using the skills they have gained in the United States. A two-week business faculty overseas study tour to the Middle East and North Africa to discover the business challenges of the MENA region. The 2011 trip will include visits to Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Cairo and Alexandria. Future Locations to be visited throughout the annual program may include the U.A.E, Egypt, Qatar, Cyprus, Tunisia, Morocco, and Algeria. Location: U.A.E and Egypt
The program compares the dynamic growth of China’s two leading economic regions – the Yangtze River Delta and the Pearl River Delta – and explores China’s transformation from a planned economy to a globally competitive market oriented economy. Faculty will meet with entrepreneurs, business executives, and government officials who make this growth happen and visit cultural sites, universities, and companies to develop a framework for the past and present. The program begins in Shanghai, China’s burgeoning economic and financial center with 25% of China’s exports and 12.5% of its financial revenues. Participants travel to Hangzhou where the GDP has increased an average of 22% annually. On to Guangzhou, a world class manufacturing center where 34% of China’s exports, 30% of its foreign direct investment, and 19% of its GDP occur on 0.5% of China’s land. Finally to Hong Kong, a world class service center that ranks among the most competitive regions on the globe. Location: China

The 5th annual FDIB-Africa program, to be conducted in Kenya and Tanzania, will once again combine over two dozen business visits, cultural experiences and academic visits and lectures over 16 days, to initiate and/or enhance faculty awareness and insight in the business, academic and cultural world of sub-Saharan Africa.
